Sony's HDR-UX1 and HDR-SR1: Two AVCHD Camcorders

The HDR-UX1 and the HDR-SR1 are two camcorders from Sony that take advantage of the AVCHD format. This High Definition format works with 8cm DVDs, flash memory or hard drive based storage.
The first of the two camcorders, the HDR-UX1 records to 8cm Dual Layer DVDs that allow for up to 1 hour of HD content. The audio will also be stored in an improved format—Dolby Digital 5.1. The unit will be available in September for $1,400.
The second camcorder, the HDR-SR1, stores its movies onto a hard drive, and thus, can save up to 10 hours of HD video. The hard drive costs an extra $100 over the 8cm DVD version, but won't cause any delays, so the HDR-SR1 will be available in September for $1,500.
Both camcorders have HDMI output and can shoot 2.3 megapixel stills. – Jason Chen

Filed under: Manufacturers, SonyFollowing up on yesterday's announcement of today's, erm, announcement, Sony gave out some more information about their new line of AVCHD high-definition camcorders. AVCHD is a new format designed for 8cm DVDs and flash- and hard-disk based memory, with Dolby Digital 5.1-channel sound and high-def capabilities. Both of the two new models are slated to hit stores in September, with the HDR-UX1 model utilizing the small DVD media and with an MSRP of US$ 1400, and the HDR-SR1 using a hard drive and a suggested price of $1500. They are designed to be compatible with properly-equipped PCs and the PlayStation 3. The DVD model will have a capability of one hour of high-def footage on a dual-layer disk, and the hard-drive model will hold up to ten hours of HD video. Not too bad for some first-gen HD technology! Panasonic is also said to be releasing models of their own based on the same format.Blu-ray or no Blu-ray, PS3 or no PS3, Sony still makes good consumer electronics, even the Microsoft guys admit they own their products. Do you expect Sony to come out with BR-based camcorders one day?Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | CommentsSource: http://feeds.hdbeat.com/~r/weblogsinc/hdbeat/~3/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hdbeat.com%2F2006%2F07%2F18%2Fsony-avchd-camcorder-followup%2F Erik Hanson

This is a format developed by, you ready for this, Sony and Panasonic to be used in consumer level high-def camcorders. The format can record onto 8cm DVDs in the MPEG4 AVC/H.264 compression system which will give you a whopping 20 minutes of recording space. Slightly Updated: Sanyo HD1a Solid-State HD Camcorder
Meer over: Slightly Updated: Sanyo HD1a Solid-State HD Camcorder|2006-07-14 18:51:53
Although some critics were unimpressed with the Sanyo Xacti HD1 when it was rolled out in January, calling its quality "disastrous," it still has the bragging rights as the smallest and lightest high-definition digital media camera. Now Sanyo has updated the mini-shooter, calling it the Xacti HD-1a, which still has that unique ability to record both 720p HD video and 5.1-megapixel stills on an SD flash memory card.
Unfortunately the addition of that lowercase "a" to its name amounts to a mini update for the Xacti HD1a, because it looks like all that's been added is the ability to record 320x240 MPEG-4 clips that can be directly used on a video iPod and 16x9 still shooting capability. BFD. Even though this thing is small, it's still nothing to get excited about. But then there's that price that seems to be dropping, where now the camcorder will retail for $699 instead of the original $750. Ships in September. – Charlie White

We may call this low-end, but only because of the bargain basement $199 price. The Mustek DV536 will take 5 megapixel stills (on par with more expensive models) and 640x480 video at 30FPS with MPEG4 compression. These are all saved onto the SD/MMC card—18 minutes with a 32MB card and up to 140 minutes on a 512MB card, depending on quality.
The camcorder has a 2.4-inch screen, plays MP3s, acts as a voice recorder, and records via analog input. It can also catch those damn kids on your lawn, but only if you're over 60. – Jason Chen

Mustek has introduced the DV536 Digital Camcorder-PVR, an amazingly inexpensive machine packed with features. If you're on a low budget you love what this unit offers: 10 megapixel still images with 10x zoom (digital), vga movies, digital card reader, and it encodes footage from your tv or dvd player. And it goes for less than $200! It sports a 2.4" screen, and it's cmos sensor is really 5 megapixels, but it interpolates the image to 10.
