Several readers have submitted news (as covered by an AFP article carried by the Sydney Morning Herald) that a massive iceberg is forming in the Antarctic. The rift in the PIne Island Glacier "is widening at a rate of two metres a day, said NASA project scientist Michael Studinger. When the ice breaks apart, it will produce an iceberg more than 880 square kilometres, said Mr Studinger, who is part of the US space agency's IceBridge project. But the process is not a result of global warming, he said." Also at the BBC. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

In this photo made from a video released by the Institute of Cetacean Research of Japan, activists of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society aboard the anti-whaling group's vessel Ady Gil, left, are sprayed with water from the Japanese whaling vessel Shonan Maru during a clash in Antarctic waters Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. The conservation group's boat had its bow sheared off and was taking on water Wednesday after it collided with the Japanese whaling ship in the frigid waters of Antarctica, the group said. The boat's six crew members were safely rescued. The clash was the most serious in the past several years, during which the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has sent vessels into far-southern waters to try to harass the Japanese fleet into ceasing its annual whale hunt. Each side routinely accuses the other of dangerous activity during what has become a cat-and-mouse chase in one of the world's most remote regions. LONDEN - De rustigste plek op aarde is niet een tropisch eilandje, maar een uitgestrekt ijsplateau in het midden van Antarctica. Ridge A ligt op 4000 meter hoogte. Van orkanen, stofstormen, aardbevingen of onweer is nooit sprake en een zuchtje wind of een wolk is er een zeldzaamheid. Dat berichtte de Britse krant The Times zaterdag. (15:37, 17-10-09)

White Christmas In Antarctica

The idea of a white Christmas may seem magical for many of us, but Science Daily asks you to "spare a thought for a team of scientists forgoing the festive season to take part in a novel campaign being carried out in one of the most inhospitable regions on Earth to support ESA's CryoSat mission." Plenty of people cooped up in the upside-down parts seem to find good ways to amuse themselves; I am especially fond of this introduction to Condition One weather, and Cops McMurdo. If anyone is reading this down there, I hope you're having a nice holiday.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Ancient lake sediments found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys generally occur on benches and platforms like these, far above the valley floors. AP Photo/PNAS, A Lewis)AP - Mosses once grew and insects crawled in what are now barren valleys in Antarctica, according to scientists who have recovered remains of life from that frozen continent. Fourteen million years ago the now lifeless valleys were tundra, similar to parts of Alaska, Canada and Siberia — cold but able to support life, researchers report.

First Evidence Of Under-Ice Volcanoes In Antarctica

An anonymous reader writes "The first evidence of a volcanic eruption from beneath Antarctica's ice sheet has been discovered by members of the British Antarctic Survey. The volcano on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet began erupting some 2,000 years ago and remains active to this day. Using airborne ice-sounding radar, scientists discovered a layer of ash produced by a 'subglacial' volcano. It extends across an area larger than Wales."Read more of this story at Slashdot.
